Throw Your Old Deodorant Away | Featuring Native

So I think I should preface with – this is NOT SPONSORED at all. You all know that I write the truth about products here, even when they are sponsored, but I think it’s important to also tell you when it’s not, even though it shouldn’t matter, it matters to some. This article is for your own health. I did not get paid for this.

The truth - when I discovered Native I wanted to shout. I couldn’t believe it. A natural deodorant that FINALLY works. Of course, I knew I wanted to share this post so I reached out to the company and they decided to send me some freebies. I was already using Native and paying for it prior. But as a thank you gift, they sent me a few different scents to try. This is my forever deodorant so I happily accepted.

Why do I need to change deodorants, C? Mine works just fine and it’s 3 bucks.

My short answer to that is, “read the back” ….

This is something you’re applying to a very sensitive part of your body every day. Your body absorbs everything you apply to the skin, not only that, but razor burn causes you to have little cuts and small open wounds, letting all those ingredients just seep in.

I have been wanting to write this article for some time but I was waiting (and waiting, and waiting) to find one that actually worked. It’s much harder to persuade people to stop using toxic ingredients and to switch to a product that doesn’t actually work and for a long time, that was the case.

I could preach all day about the negative effects of aluminum-based antiperspirant but the fact is, I had nothing to help you replace it.

Sure, there are home remedies and recipes online. And sure, there are hundreds of brands of natural deodorants. But the natural deodorants weren’t working and the home remedies, they take too long.

When you replace a product that takes 2 seconds MAX to apply and work, you gotta find something good. REAL GOOD.

I could write all day on this aluminum shit and be mad about ever being addicted to it in the first place. I could also sulk about the fact that we even have to wear deodorant in the first place, because I mean, I basically haven’t been the last ten years. I was sweaty and sometimes smelly because I was wearing natural deodorants that did not work. But to me, I didn’t care. Because I got used to it and was basically NOT SORRY to everyone else. Ya know why? Because I’m not sorry when it comes to my health. I call the shots. I sweat. I smell. And frankly, I don’t give a shit.

BUT, it’s pretty nice to not be sweaty anymore. :P

Here’s the thing, whoever’s bright idea it was to force society into believing our armpits shouldn’t naturally sweat… well, that’s who I’m mad at. I haven’t looked them up online, I think it’s safer for their families if I don’t know that. Hahah. Ok, kidding, a bit.

I know I’m being extremely ADD here but I promise I have points.

So, every once in a while, I would give in and use a “real” deodorant with an antiperspirant. Boy, would that set me back. WAY back.

You see, you get to a point with your underarms where if you’re not constantly blocking your sweat ducts, they stop producing so much sweat. I was still sweaty, believe me, but not nearly as sweaty as the few weeks I would have to endure after giving into one night of aluminum deodorant.

Ya know, you’re out of town for a wedding, forget the stuff, go to the drugstore, and the only natural deodorant they have is Tom’s… but you know that makes you smell like licorice, so you go with Suave or something. UGH. Bad move. Sure the bride and groom are happy that you’re not smelling up the place, but man does it set you back.

Other brands (F THEM, I’ve tried everything, and for sake of not hurting a small struggling company, I’m not going to call them out, but they don’t work)!

Other brands I’ve tried either outright would NOT work, like, I take a shower, apply, and be sweaty and smelly in five minutes and/or completely irritate my skin. I was so confused, I’m not allergic to very many “natural” things, so why the hell are my pits raw? You know how embarrassing that is in Yoga? ** Me hoping everyone is actually focusing on their inner peace and not my red armpits**

I was lathering up with so much coconut oil at night. Trying to “fix” the situation. But they remained irritated and so did I.

BEING HEALTHY SHOULD NOT BE THIS HARD. Another reason I haven’t written this post yet – I want this stuff to be easy for you guys. You’re all ADD as hell. I know that. We all are this day and age.

Here’s the 411 on this aluminum BS –

The health concerns around antiperspirants ARE NOT worth the risk.

Guys, seriously this is the only body you get. SO MANY studies have suggested that aluminum-based antiperspirants could be linked to breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. So why would we not err on the side of caution and minimize the impact of potentially harmful chemicals on our body?

Aluminum is the active ingredient in all antiperspirants and many deodorants. Chemically-treated aluminum compounds, such as aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium, are used to temporarily “plug up” your sweat glands and prevent you from sweating. Alarmingly, a typical antiperspirant contains anywhere from 15 to 25 per cent aluminum. This can’t be good for you.

Studies show that small amounts of aluminum in antiperspirants are absorbed by the skin and even more so when you shave.

Of course, people who LOVE aluminum deodorants will argue this. They like to think that such minimal amounts of these ingredients won’t do any harm. So of course, I like to point out that I’ve been using deodorant since I was 14. Every single day. Like, one time I called my mom in High School from the principal’s office because I forgot to wear deodorant. I couldn’t sleep without wearing it. I've been wearing THOSE chemicals every day for 1.... um.. a LOT of years.

It’s not only about the chemically treated aluminum, though….

Aluminum-based antiperspirants also contain a cocktail of other chemicals (I know right, WTF), such as cyclopentasiloxane, stearyl alcohol, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, PPG-14 butyl ether, hydrogenated castor oil, petrolatum, phenyl trimethicone, talc, cyclodextrin, fragrance, mineral oil, behenyl alcohol, and blue 1 lake (CI 42090).

There’s really no reason to put all of this crap on your skin if there’s a better option. And now, there is.

Here’s an example of the warning listed on a typical antiperspirant:

“For external use only. Do not use on broken skin. Ask a doctor before use if you have kidney disease. Stop use if rash or irritation occurs. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.”

Pulled from here.

Honestly, It’s time we all took responsibility for our health and stopped "bandaiding" over everything. We can actually PREVENT most diseases.
